Distinguished and Famous people from Lower Eyre Peninsula
🧭 Matthew Flinders
Matthew Flinders surveyed the lower Eyre Peninsula coast aboard Investigator in 1802, naming Coffin Bay during that work. The expedition went on to explore Port Lincoln’s harbour and surrounding country. The navigation carried terrible risks: a cutter capsized near Cape Catastrophe, drowning eight men, before the ship reached Port Lincoln. The State Library’s voyage chronology records those events and the subsequent surveys. His local connection is direct exploration and mapping of this coastline, with both the geographical observations and the losses forming part of the expedition’s history.
🧭 Robert Brown
Botanist Robert Brown accompanied Matthew Flinders aboard Investigator in 1802. Flinders’s published account describes landing with the botanists and climbing Stamford Hill while exploring Port Lincoln. The State Library’s account of the expedition also identifies the Port Lincoln grevillea among the plants collected on the voyage. Brown’s work added specimens and observations to the expedition’s charts and coastal descriptions. He later inherited Joseph Banks’s herbarium and library, transferred them to the British Museum and continued to manage them. His botanical interests lasted long after the Australian voyage, giving those early field collections a place in a much larger scientific career.
